Suwałki w rytmie bluesa |
24th July 2009 |
From the 16th to 18th July 2009, Suwałki became “the capital of blues”. The 2009 Suwałki Blues Festival had a similar lineup as last year’s. It was enriched, however, with Live Blues Breakfasts which took place in local restaurants and pubs. The program for Friday and Saturday filled blues fans’ time with concerts from early morning to late at night. Performances could be seen on the following stages: the Suwałki Youth Club (MDK) next to Grande-Synthe Passage Way, the stage next to the Regional Culture and Art Centre (ROKiS) on Chłodna Street, as well as on the two big stages located within the area of 3 May Constitution Park and Kościuszki Street. Such diversity allowed for performances of more than 30 bands from all over the world, including: the USA, France, Great Britain, Lithuania, the Czech Republic, Norway and, of course, Poland.

An unofficial beginning of the Festival took place in the patio of the Town Hall, where there was a concert by Sławek Wierzcholski and Nocna Zmiana Bluesa, accompanied with Suwałki Chamber Orchestra “Camerata dell’Arte” conducted by Kazimierz Dąbrowski.
The harmonica player’s amazing solos energized the elderly audience and drove the young to dance. During the concert Sławek Wierzcholski and Nocna Zmian Bluesa were given a golden record for the album “Histora choroby”. After the concert, which lasted, an hour and a half, blues fans moved to Ogród Letni Rozmarino (the Summer Garden of Rozmarino Pizza Place-Gallery), where the more concerts took stage.
Performances continued into Friday, 17th July. Starting at 10 am, all were welcomed to a morning of blues with breakfast in one of the four “blues restaurants”. An intimate atmosphere in the restaurants let one relax to the accompaniment of blues music. A woken up and full bluesman needed nothing more than another dose of blues to be happy. On the MDK stage two Polish bands, Los Agentos and Devil Blues, performed. Bożena Mazur’s amazing voice and the lively sound of the Devil Blues heated up the stage, which was already warming up from the beautiful sunshine!
At the same time, near ROKiS, Graf Hotel was firing up the stage. Piotr Syta’s, the band leader, powerful voice rocked the buildings on Chłodna street from foundations to roofs. Even the passer-bys had to stop and listen to the music for at least a moment, while these lively tunes carried them.

The summer atmosphere and the green area of the Suwałki centre allowed fans to enjoy the blues music. The crowds came to listen to the performances of Wanda Johnson, an Afro-American singer endowed with a beautiful soul voice, who gave a concert with The Strimp City Slim Band. Next came the French artists, Jesus Volt player, who warmed up the audience before the long expected performance of the Polish band – TSA.
At 9:30 p.m. we heard the first riffs of an amazing musician from overseas – Joe Bonamassa (USA), by many regarded as one of the best guitarists in the world. In his concert, he proved his talent and delighted the audience with his masterful solos.
After the show, the audience rushed to clubs. The concerts in the clubs lasted into the late night hours. There, Virgis Jutas (LT), VooDoo Soup (PL), Andy Egert Blues Band (CH/PL), Przytuła & Kruk (PL) and Tomasz Kierejsza (Suwałki) played.
Saturday started with live intimate blues breakfasts (Bullfrog Brown (EST), Virgis Jutas and Aleksandr Belki (LT) as well as Paweł Szymański and Marek Wojtowicz (PL) performed). The Saturday program was enriched with guitar workshops carried out by Marek Kołakowski.
In the early afternoon, on the MDK stage, the Blues Doctors played. Their lively music and lyrics kept the audience in good spirits. The four artists have a mixed sound of blues, funk and soul, which is easily heard in their songs. Such combination of styles, energetic pieces and great weather made people dance. After their performance, on stage appeared the band Outsider Blues (PL), playing in Chicago style. Meanwhile, the concert on the stage near ROKiS was taking place. The hearts of the audience were won over by the Polish band Siódma w Nocy. The beautiful weather allowed fans to relax in the park with cool beverages and other attractions available in the main concert area. Next came the gentle sounds of Steve Lury (GB) and Bullfrog Brown (EST). Following this performance, the Road Band (LT) and Jarle Bernhoft and Knut Reiersrud Band (NOR) appeared.
The highlight of the evening was the performance by Ten Years After. The band was established in 1967 by Alvin Lee and searched for its own musical style within blues, rock & roll, and jazz. Currently, Leo Lyons describes their music as psychodelic blues-rock.
Needing more blues, the crowds rushed into the clubs where Spoonful Of Blues (NOR), Mothers Follow Chairs (CZ), Paweł Szymański (PL) and Marek Wojtowicz (PL) all played.
